How to care for your Canvas.

  1. You do not NEED to do anything. Most acrylic artist to not layer shiny items on their artwork.

  2. If you desire a shiny finish, it is best to wait for 30 days to seal your painting.  Your painting needs to cure fully (dry to the touch is different than fully cured).  Acrylic paint dries from the outside in, so it may feel dry to the touch but it isn’t all the way cured.  Trying to seal it early could result in bad results such as streaking or cracking.

Once the paint is cured, you can seal it using a variety of different sealers.  You can use products like Minwax Polycrylic (found at Lowes), any clear spray sealer, or even Resin.  You would need to follow the manufacturer's instructions to apply these sealants.  My recommendations would be to use a spray or Minwax Polycrylic with a foam brush.  A lot of paintbrushes can leave lines on your painting that you may not like.

For coasters, tumblers, or vases, if you would like for them to be heat resistant you would want to choose epoxy.  For tumblers please select a food-safe epoxy-like stonecoat.  Please read all instructions carefully to ensure you are taking all proper precautions.

Coasters, Tumblers, and Vases

You have three options for curing your artwork:

  • Let the paint dry for 30 days on the same cup we used to pour it on

  • Let the paint dry for 7 days on the cup we used to pour on, after 7 days take the cup off and place the tumbler, coaster, or vase in a cool oven, and set the oven to 350 degrees for 30 minutes

After the piece is cooled off you can finish it.  If you do not finish, it is to be used as a decorative item only.

  1. You can finish with a dishwasher-safe Mod Podge. Do NOT microwave your artwork! Even if you use a dishwasher-safe Mod Podge, I strongly encourage you to wash it gently by hand.

  2. Following all instructions, use a Resin with low VOC and Food Safe.  My favorite is ArtResin or Tumbler resin, this leaves the product looking like it is covered with a protective layer of glass and really makes that artwork pop. YOU MUST FOLLOW ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. Resin can be dangerous if you do not take proper precautions.

  3. Another favorite of mine is Rust-oleum 2x clear coat spray.

Need to wash your artwork?

Please only do this if you have a clear finish on it and wash ONLY by hand.
